NEA Study Opportunity!

We are always looking for ways to improve our programming, and so we’re partnering with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Michigan State University to conduct a research study to help us better understand what aspects of Sandbox@ help students improve their social, emotional, and technical skills.

To this end, we are asking you to join the research study. Specifically, we are asking you to give us permission to

  • Provide links to the student enrolled to complete five surveys online. Three of these would occur during Sandbox@.

  • Provide you with links to complete two surveys online

Importantly, whether you grant us permission will have no effect on your Sandbox Workshop experience.

  • We would use this data to improve programming at IOB, develop other programs at similar non-profit organizations across the nation, and answer important questions about the role of arts-based education in the development of youth.

If you agree to participate, you can change your mind at any time. You will also be able to ask us to exclude any data we collect.

If you wish to participate, please check the box in the registration form. You will be emailed an online form describing the study further. If you wish to participate, please sign the form before the workshop date. You will have the option to print copies of this form. We will also have printed copies available at IOB for you to keep.

If you have any questions about the study, you may contact one of the study coordinators, Dr. Celeste Campos-Castillo at (517) 355-8372 / camposca@msu.edu or Dr. Jeana M. Holt at (414) 229-6768 / jmholt@uwm.edu

Program Description

These in-person, 90-minute workshops combine art, storytelling, and STEaM-based projects. YES, siblings are welcome to join in the fun! The flow of the workshop will be something like this:

We always start with the Question of the Day to ease any nervousness and get everyone’s creative juices flowing. This isn’t a pop quiz, these are fun questions like “What’s your favorite cartoon character?” or “Name your favorite superhero.”

Next up might be a Creative Challenge like “Draw that favorite cartoon character in a completely different environment (like underwater or on the moon!).”

Students could use an iPad, sketchbook, legos, or any number of art supplies to bring their creative ideas to life while working with a fellow classmate - sharing ideas, coming up with background stories about what they are drawing – basically making magic together.

Or you might be invited to Create a miniature town and characters using provided art supplies and building materials to bring their creative ideas to life. You’ll work with a fellow classmate - sharing ideas, coming up with background stories about what they are drawing – basically making magic together. IOB’s Creative Technologists work with the students at these workshops to make Stop Motion Animations that showcase the stories the students create.

Finally, you’ll share your creations with fellow participants.

Many of the activities introduce participants to some of the most popular activities that are part of our daily, online Sandbox programming - like Smactivities, Natterdays and Doodle Lounge. Learn more about Sandbox Daily Programming!
